Catharsis. I actually feel a lot better… although I doubt I’ll rewatch Atonement for a very, very long time.

Come Back To Me || Atonement || Death is the Road to Awe

Atonement + The Fountain score= PERFECTION.

The moment when your parents go out for dinner, and you put in your Atonement DVD and TURN THE SPEAKERS UP FULL BLAST.

So you can watch this scene over and over again in ecstasy peace.

We take a pause in our regularly scheduled fangirling so that I may wax poetic about Atonement.

See, I actually read the first novel when it was first published in 2001, when I worked at a book store (YES I AM REALLY THAT OLD, DON’T JUDGE). It instantly became one of my favorites, and the movie adaptation is by far one of the most flawless adaptations from a book I’ve ever seen. Both the novel and the film are gorgeously written and filmed, with so much heart, passion, and emotional devastation.

SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE BOOK OR SEEN THE MOVIE.

And obviously it is a tragedy that Robbie and Cecilia never have the opportunity to truly consummate their love. But the TRUE tragedy is that Briony (FUCKING BRIONY, THE ONE LIFE RUINER TO RULE THEM ALL) never learns her lesson. So traumatized by what she’s done, she remains in a suspended state of pre-adolescence for the rest of her life. She rewrites Robbie’s and Cecilia’s relationship, wildly veering from the truth as she did so many years ago.

She claims that she does this to give them the happiness she denied them in life. But really, she’s recreating history, reshaping the memory of both her sister and her sister’s lover. She’s doing exactly what she did when she was a child, and she honestly believes that she’s done the right thing, just as she did before.

She still can’t discern reality from fiction, and she still can’t tell the truth.

And that, my friends, is the true tragedy of Atonement.

I wish. Oh, how I wish.

I wish. Oh, how I wish.

Flawless, amazing, better than your favorite movie, etc.

Normally I do not condone breaking up relationships, but what I wouldn’t give for Keira to dump her second-rate Orlando Bloom lookalike and for McAvoy to leave his wife.Robbie + Cecilia 4-EVAAAAAAA.
