But if Summer did see all the possible layers of interpretation in The Graduate [all the womb references, the running, the pool etc], then I think it makes sense that she’d be so horrified that Tom only interpreted it in the simplest way, that she’d realise not only that they don’t connect in the way she wants but that [possibly] his ideals are very different not only from hers but from what Tom himself thinks his ideals are. When he’s talking early in their friendship about romantic love [the concept of which we know was partly based on The Graduate], she finds it endearing. Perhaps she thought the type of pure and sincere love he seemed to be talking about was endearing. Clearly he would have explained to her before they saw The Graduate that it is the ultimate example, the cornerstone of that romantic beleif system. Up until that point, she might have been thinking that his endearing romanticism and her reasonable cynicism might still be compatible. But what if she came out The Graduate noticing how much the women are symbols in The Graduate? She might have come out not only gobsmacked that Tom thinks its romantic but further that Tom doesn’t recognise how objectifying the male attitude is, how much he likes the ‘perfection’ in the love story and doesn’t notice how the women aren’t fleshed out or individuals. Suddenly she’s not just thinking he’s a romantic guy who’s really into her, but he’s a guy who idealises perfect love until the object of love is two dimensional. Maybe their relationship is over when they leave The Graduate because she suddenly recognises that Tom’s interpretation of their relationship is the same as his interpretation of The Graduate, and that in the same way he only wanted the nice parts of the story, he wants to replicate his idea of perfect love with her in a way that is not endearingly different from her attitude but a polar opposite.

The (500) Days of Summer attitude of “He wants you so bad” seems attractive to some women and men, especially younger ones, but I would encourage anyone who has a crush on my character to watch it again and examine how selfish he is. He develops a mildly delusional obsession over a girl onto whom he projects all these fantasies. He thinks she’ll give his life meaning because he doesn’t care about much else going on in his life. A lot of boys and girls think their lives will have meaning if they find a partner who wants nothing else in life but them. That’s not healthy. That’s falling in love with the idea of a person, not the actual person.

Ugh, I’m sorry to double post with two quotes, but he’s dropping another truth bomb here. I hate when people misinterpret 500DOS and think of Summer as some kind of bitch, or, alternately, as a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. That’s only how his character saw her. To me, this movie was basically about Nice Guy Syndrome: A guy who thinks he’s just so nice that he’s entitled to the woman he wants, and when she decides she doesn’t want him back, she becomes a bitch, or a whore.
