1. It’s not that he thought Jenny was his soulmate. Maybe with enough time, she could have been. It’s that Jenny was a perfect blend of both his worlds, the one where he was the Watcher of the greatest Slayer to ever live and the one where he was just Rupert, a librarian. When Jenny died, he knew that he would never again be able to find such a balance.
2. In the same vein, in another life, he could have pictured himself very happy with Joyce.
3. In the core Scooby Gang, he sees Buffy as his greatest triumph, Willow as his greatest failure, and Xander as his greatest joy.
